29th May 2012 - Databroker Calling... Hello Europe
May
2012
Well it could have been worse. Englebert finished second bottom.
Last weekend it was Eurovision and along with 125 million Europeans, Databroker tuned in for the annual song contest, that has long since replaced periodic invasion, raiding and looting as the pastime of mighty European leaders. For one night a year, political correctness is sent home and we can all have a good laugh at Jonny Foreigner (and in some cases his identical twin) his terrible musical tastes, his funny clothes, his hats, on-stage water features and of course the very dodgy voting habits.
However given the apparent lack of competition how could the “Hump” get it so wrong? He knows what he is doing, he is a very successful performer with millions of fans across the globe, his song was quite good and (as you would expect from a man of his calibre) the delivery was excellent.
What was wrong was that the song was not what the people wanted to hear. Whatever the tastes of the British, the people of Europe wanted an upbeat, thumpy, thumpy with Keyboard riff and attractive young female performer, and not a slow romantic number from a British National treasure who first made the hit parade in 1967.
Quite simply the British delegation was trying to impose their tastes on the Europeans as opposed to listening to what the people actually wanted.
